Sri Lanka Has a New Prime Minister

24. Sep 2024 | Sri Lanka Politics

Sri Lanka has just made history again, with the appointment of Harini Amarasuriya as the country’s third female Prime Minister. It’s an inspiring moment, especially knowing she follows in the footsteps of two remarkable women, Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Chandrika Kumaratunga. But this isn't just about having a new leader — it feels like a real step forward for the country, a reflection of how women are increasingly shaping the future of Sri Lanka.

What makes Harini Amarasuriya stand out is the depth of her experience and knowledge. With a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh, she’s an accomplished academic, researcher, and author. She’s spent years studying critical issues like youth politics, activism, gender, and development — things that really matter to everyday people. On top of that, she’s been a senior lecturer at the Open University of Sri Lanka, helping shape the minds of the next generation.

But what I find most inspiring is that Harini’s influence goes far beyond the classroom. She’s a fierce advocate for social change, constantly speaking up for free education, gender equality, and LGBTQ+ rights. Her activism is a clear reflection of her belief in a more just and inclusive society. It’s not often you see someone with such a powerful mix of academic insight and hands-on activism, and it makes her leadership all the more exciting.

With Harini as Prime Minister, there’s a real sense of optimism. Her unique blend of intellect, compassion, and activism is exactly what Sri Lanka needs right now. Many are hopeful that she will push the country toward a future that’s more equal and inclusive — a future where progress isn't just talked about, but actually felt by everyone.

Here’s to Harini Amarasuriya, and to the bright new chapter ahead for Sri Lanka. Change is here, and it feels full of promise.
